Arquus rolls out ready-to-use, military-grade security

Building on more than a century of experience, the French defense manufacturer Arquus designs, delivers and deploys high-performance military vehicles worldwide. Today, the company is part of Volvo Group, the Swedish multinational focused on automotive products, and its top client is the French army, which chooses Arquus to supply 90% of its wheeled vehicles.

The French government demands exceptionally high security on defense projects, requiring specific data treatment for four different grades of sensitive information: restricted, classified, secret and top secret. To make work on those projects more fluid for its 2,000 employees, Arquus looked to build a productive work environment fully compliant with regulations for handling restricted data: the Arquus Defense Network, or ADN.

“We want the user experience for restricted data to be as close as possible to the user experience of our other systems,” says Yannick Lestriez, CISO & Infrastructure Manager at Arquus. “In the Volvo group, we use Microsoft Office 365. With Oodrive, we get that experience, plus ANSSI-certified security.”

External collaboration platform deployed in one day

When the French government announced its new regulations, Arquus was 100% integrated into the information system of the Volvo Group. To comply with the new rules without impeding productivity, Arquus decided to create a separate, secure, autonomous on-premise network – the ADN – with a delivery date of 2022. In the meantime, the company needed a secure SaaS platform to exchange data with partners and customers, such as contracts and calls for tender, in compliance with French export control regulations.

This was an immediate need, and Arquus ran a benchmark of leading suppliers meeting French security criteria, paying close attention to modularity, functionality, price, and integration potential. Oodrive scored high on every category in the benchmark. Already the frontrunner in consideration for the on-premise ADN project, Oodrive was a natural fit. Arquus opted to use Oodrive Work and Oodrive Share as secure content collaboration platforms, both for the short-term SaaS platform and the ADN.

“Setting up a tool for external collaboration is something that we would typically expect to take weeks,” says Yannick. “With Oodrive, we are ready in one day. From the very beginning, external partners have been very happy, both that the tool is in place, and that it is so simple to deploy and use.”

Beginning in 2019, Arquus began to move its information systems, applications and data into its ADN based on Oodrive, as an environment for all data termed “restricted” by French regulations. Four Arquus applications are fully migrated to the ADN, and ten internal services have been deployed on the network. Now, the team is working on a complete document management service for 2022.

“The solutions have to meet increasingly stringent regulations and be as easy-to-use as the tools familiar from our everyday lives,” says Yannick. “Oodrive matches the experience of our previous productivity suite, so that right away, users can navigate without getting lost.”

Pre-approved for military projects

Arquus continues to move applications, functions, workstations and unified communications into its ADN, based on Oodrive Work and Oodrive Share, transferring components one by one. Decisions are made in each instance whether to lift and shift an existing component, develop a new service, or employ security-approved services such as Oodrive Sign. As Yannick explains, Oodrive services have the specific appeal of already being referenced by the Ministère des Armées, the French Ministry of Armed Forces, making connections and approvals speedy and simple.

“Oodrive is already referenced at the Ministère des Armées, which is a really valuable aspect of Oodrive’s offer to the defense industry. That effectively guarantees that Oodrive can enable collaboration with the ministry at speed, because access requirements are already in place.”

For Arquus, Oodrive helps make compliant collaboration simple, now and in the future, helping the company combine freedom and security on the front line of change.
